What hangover cures are available at the local pharmacy?
We might be able to put a man on the moon, but we have yet to develop a really effective hangover cure. At this time of year there will be plenty of people nursing sore heads and dry mouths from too many cocktails at their work’s Christmas party, so I decided to visit my local pharmacy to see what advice or help was available.
The pharmacist informed me that a sensible approach is to minimise the risk of getting a hangover in the first place. This includes making sure you’ve eaten before you go out and drinking a soft drink after each alcoholic drink. He also recommended that you should avoid drinking in rounds because then you’re pressured to drink at the same speed as the fastest drinker in the group (particularly if one of your friends plays rugby!).
But if you do wake up the next day feeling worse for wear than you need to give your body time to recover. The pharmacist told me that it takes a healthy liver one hour to get rid of one unit of alcohol and you should give yourself at least a two day break before drinking again.
The pharmacist also recommended trying some of these hangover remedies available in your pharmacy:
Vitamin B, C, Zinc and Magnesium supplements – Alcohol drains the body of vitamins, so it’s a good idea to give yourself a boost the next day.
Milk Thistle – this traditional remedy has been used since Roman times for its link to improved liver function.
Alka-Seltzer or Resolve – these can help sooth an upset stomach and headache
Dioralyte – This electrolyte rehydration powder is more commonly taken in response to diorrhea but can also be effective after a few too many Mojitos
Pepto Bismal – this is used for treating an upset stomach, nausea and indigestion
Gaviscon or Andrews Original Salts – also used for treating an upset stomach
Berocca – this provides a high dose of vitamins that can help combat lethargy
